The Korean film 'If We Were', starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, has recently become a quiet box office success. Released on December 31, 2025, the melodrama achieved 2.6 million admissions, topping the box office for four consecutive weeks without extensive promotion, driven by strong word-of-mouth. This performance surpassed the 1.91 million admissions of 'Decision to Leave', previously the highest-grossing Korean melodrama of the 2020s.
'If We Were' tells the story of Eun-ho (Koo Kyo-hwan) and Jung-won (Moon Ga-young), former lovers who reunite by chance after 10 years. The film subtly portrays the realities faced by young people struggling to find a place in Seoul, exploring the lingering emotions and shared history of those who have experienced love and its aftermath. Koo Kyo-hwan plays Eun-ho, who dreams of game development, while Moon Ga-young portrays Jung-won, an aspiring architect. Moon Ga-young received the Best Actress award in the film category at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards for her role.
Alongside the film's success, Koo Kyo-hwan's personal life also made headlines. Despite the strong on-screen chemistry with Moon Ga-young, which led some to believe they were a real-life couple, it was later revealed that Koo Kyo-hwan had legally married director Lee Ok-seop in 2022. The couple, who had been dating for nine years, are described by their agency as each other's closest colleagues and family.
