The highly popular 2016 K-drama 'Descendants of the Sun', which starred Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, is making headlines again as it is being remade into an Indonesian theatrical film. The original series achieved a peak viewership rating of 38.8% and garnered immense popularity both in Korea and across Asia, creating a cultural phenomenon. This remake was announced to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the original drama's broadcast and will be a 'free adaptation' incorporating Indonesian sentiments and cultural backgrounds.
The Indonesian version, tentatively titled 'Descendants of the Sun Indonesia', aims for a 2027 local release and has already completed filming, currently in post-production. Reza Rahadian will play the new Yoo Si-jin, and Dian Sastrowardoyo will portray Kang Mo-yeon, with Hanung Bramantyo directing. Korean production company NEW is co-producing, and Content Panda, a NEW affiliate, will handle domestic distribution, making it available to Korean audiences as well.
Bloggers express high anticipation for the adaptation, which will retain the core narrative of the original while reflecting Indonesia's internal situations and emotions. Many are curious about the synergy between the new cast and the localized story, wondering how it will build upon the original's reputation. The news that filming is already complete has surprised many, and there is also excitement regarding the potential release date in Korea.
