The 2021 JTBC drama 'Nevertheless,' starring Song Kang and Han So Hee, generated high expectations before its broadcast but concluded with low viewership ratings, mostly in the 1% range. However, even five years after its finale, scenes from the drama continue to circulate on social media and online communities, earning it the title of 'visual legend.' The overwhelming visual chemistry and delicate emotional portrayal by the two lead actors are key reasons for its enduring buzz, regardless of its initial ratings.
'Nevertheless,' is a 10-episode youth romance drama that centers on the relationship between Yu Na-bi (Han So Hee), an art student who doesn't believe in love but wants to date, and Park Jae-eon (Song Kang), who finds relationships bothersome but enjoys casual flings. Based on a popular webtoon, the series aired on Saturday nights at 11 PM, with some episodes rated 19+. While its premiere recorded 2.207% viewership, ratings subsequently dropped. The drama's unique direction, conveying emotions through distance and movement rather than dialogue, made its short clips highly shareable and contributed to its lasting popularity.
Many bloggers have commented that despite the disappointing ratings, the visual chemistry between Song Kang and Han So Hee was impeccable. Han So Hee portrayed a 22-year-old vulnerable in love, while Song Kang played a character who engaged in push-and-pull dynamics, making it a significant work for both actors. The drama is currently available on OTT platforms like Netflix and TVING and is praised for its 'hyperreal romance' approach, subtly depicting realistic relationship dynamics.
