Jeongseon Mindungsan in Gangwon Province is a popular hiking destination in Korea, famous for its autumn silver grass. Nicknamed the 'Alps of Korea,' it offers spectacular open ridges and vast fields of silver grass, attracting numerous hikers, especially during autumn when the entire mountain is covered in golden reeds. Beyond autumn, Mindungsan presents different charms in summer with its green ridges and in winter with its clear mountain contours.
Mindungsan features four main hiking courses: Course 1 (starting from Jeungsan Elementary School), Course 2 (from Neungseon Village), Course 3 (from Samnae Mineral Spring), and Course 4 (from Hwaam Mineral Spring). Course 2 is recommended for beginners, while the shortest route, a 30-minute hike, begins from Dollinae Shelter (Balgudeok). However, during the silver grass festival season from May to November, parking at Dollinae Shelter is restricted on weekends and public holidays. Arriving before 5 AM allows for unrestricted parking. Mindungsan's second parking lot is free, but vehicle access to Balgudeok Village entrance is controlled on weekends.
Bloggers advise preparing water and snacks due to steep sections, and bringing hats, outerwear, and drinks as the ridges have little shade and can be windy. The well-maintained trails are suitable for families, and the autumn foliage combined with silver grass creates picturesque photo opportunities. Early arrival is crucial for weekend visits to avoid parking difficulties.
