Seoul's city center is transforming into a vast outdoor library this autumn. Special cultural events are underway at three locations: 'Reading Seoul Plaza' in Seoul Plaza, 'Gwanghwamun Book Yard' in Gwanghwamun Plaza, and 'Reading Clear Stream' in Cheonggyecheon, allowing citizens to enjoy reading amidst nature. This innovative library model, which began in Seoul Plaza in 2022, expands the library beyond buildings, enabling anyone to borrow and read books for free.
The Seoul Outdoor Library operates every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from September 4th to November 1st. In September, evening operations from 4 PM to 10 PM are also available, allowing visitors to enjoy reading with the city's night view. Each location offers unique programs: Seoul Plaza features approximately 5,000 books and outdoor movie screenings, Gwanghwamun Plaza provides a book-gazing program and cultural performances in an atmospheric evening setting, and Cheonggyecheon offers a quiet space to read about 2,000 books accompanied by the sound of flowing water.
Bloggers recommend the Seoul Outdoor Library as an ideal autumn outing spot where one can enjoy leisure with a book without traveling far. Many express satisfaction with the experience of reading while leaning on a beanbag and gazing at the Gwanghwamun Plaza scenery or listening to the Cheonggyecheon stream. Indoor spaces like the Gwanghwamun Lounge are also available for rainy days, and while food consumption is restricted, beverages are allowed.
