Lee Suzy, the first Korean author to win the Hans Christian Andersen Award, is currently holding a special exhibition titled 'Shining Children' at the cultural complex Picturebook Garden 1937. This exhibition highlights Lee Suzy's unique world of picture books, showcasing her ability to convey emotions and rhythm through wordless narratives.
The exhibition spans five spaces within Picturebook Garden 1937, including the 1st to 4th floors and the Governor's Office, with each area themed around her representative works. Visitors can view original illustrations and digital prints from various works, such as her debut piece 『Alice in Wonderland』, the "Boundary Trilogy" including 『Wave, Let's Play』, 『Shadow Play』, and 『Into the Mirror』, and her recent work 『Today is My Birthday』. Notably, the Alice in 『Alice in Wonderland』 was inspired by the author's six-year-old self, and 『Today is My Birthday』 is a collaboration with poet Jin Eun-young, dedicated to the child victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
Attendees can enjoy searching for hidden white rabbits throughout the exhibition and experience how picture books transcend simple narratives to become art through works like 『A Dream of Water』, which evokes movement and sound. A pop-up book space and a merchandise area for the author's goods are also available, and docent explanations offer deeper insights into the works. Bloggers have praised Lee Suzy as a "born genius of picture books," noting that her works convey a unique sense of rhythm and profound emotion.
