The "Culture Day" (문화가 있는 날) initiative in Korea has recently expanded its benefits, leading to increased public interest in cultural activities, particularly on Wednesdays. While many public cultural facilities now offer weekly benefits, there's a common misunderstanding regarding movie discounts, which operate on a different schedule.
Since April 2026, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism expanded "Culture Day" from once a month to every Wednesday for many national and public institutions. This includes free admission or extended hours at places like Deoksugung Palace, the National Museum of Korea, and various art museums such as the Suwon Museum of Art. However, movie discounts, available at major cinemas like CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox, are offered twice a month – specifically on the second and last Wednesdays. During these times, tickets for general 2D screenings are often priced at 10,000 KRW, a discount from the usual 14,000 KRW, with some special screens offering larger savings.
Bloggers note that while the increased frequency of cultural benefits is a positive change, it's crucial for individuals to verify specific details, especially for movie discounts, as times and prices can vary by theater. They emphasize the practical value of these discounts for individuals and families, suggesting that utilizing Wednesday evenings for cultural outings like museum visits or movie screenings can offer significant savings and a more relaxed experience compared to weekends.
