Busan International Film Festival 2026: Opening Film and Key Highlights

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is set to run from October 6th to 15th, 2026, generating significant interest as it marks a new chapter after its 30th anniversary. This year, the festival has achieved official recognition as an A-list international competitive film festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), elevating its global standing. The event is also expanding its reach beyond the main Cinema Center to various locations across Busan, making cinema more accessible to local citizens and visitors.

The opening film for the 31st BIFF is director Kim Jong-kwan's new work, "Day and Night to Each Other" (<낮과 밤은 서로에게>). This film, which will have its world premiere in Busan, features a cast including Kim Min-ha, Joo Jong-hyuk, Han Sun-hwa, Jang Ryul, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Hee-joon, Jeon So-young, and Kim Dong-hwi. It explores the conversations and emotions of four couples within a single cafe setting at different times. Actress Kim Min-ha, a lead in the opening film, will also host the opening ceremony, while global star Michelle Yeoh is slated to receive the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award.' The festival will screen a total of 316 films, including 95 world premieres, across 8 theaters and 31 screens, and will host the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) from October 10th to 13th.

Local bloggers highlight that BIFF is evolving beyond a traditional film viewing event at the Cinema Center, with the 'Dongnaebangne BIFF' program extending screenings to 18 locations throughout the city, integrating film into daily life. This expansion signifies the festival's transformation into a celebration for Busan residents and tourists, not just film industry professionals. Attendees are advised to check screening locations and travel times in advance, as the festival utilizes multiple venues such as CGV Centum City and Lotte Cinema Centum City. Practical tips for ticket booking include checking for cancellation tickets for sold-out shows and using the Chrome browser with pop-up blockers disabled.
