The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is set to open on October 6, 2026, generating significant buzz as it embarks on a new 30-year journey. This year marks a pivotal moment for the festival, having recently received official recognition as an A-list international competitive film festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), elevating its global standing.
The festival will run for 10 days until October 15, featuring 316 films across 8 theaters and 31 screens, including 95 world premieres. The opening film is Kim Jong-kwan's new work, *<The Day and Night Between Us>*, making its world premiere. Actress Kim Min-ha, a lead in the opening film, will also host the opening ceremony, while world-renowned actress Michelle Yeoh will be honored with the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' award. This year's BIFF expands its reach with 'Dongnebangne BIFF,' extending screenings to 18 locations throughout Busan, moving beyond the Busan Cinema Center to engage the entire city.
Local bloggers express excitement for the diverse events beyond film screenings, such as red carpet appearances, outdoor stage greetings, and the Asia Contents & Film Market (ACFM), which runs from October 10-13. They highlight the importance of checking screening locations and schedules in advance, noting that the festival has evolved into a comprehensive cultural event for both film enthusiasts and the general public, transforming Busan into a vibrant film city.
