Interest in hiking Seoraksan's Gongnyongneungseon Ridge is currently high. Many hikers are challenging themselves to complete the Gongnyongneungseon course, especially the round-trip route starting and ending at Sogongwon, as autumn foliage season approaches. This challenging course is popular for its exceptional scenic beauty.
The typical Gongnyongneungseon course is a round trip starting from Sogongwon in Seorak-dong, passing through Biseondae, Madeungnyeong Samgeori, Gongnyongneungseon, turning back at Huiungak Shelter, and returning to Sogongwon via Cheonbuldong Valley. For beginners, the total duration is estimated to be 13-14 hours, while experienced hikers might take 9-10 hours. Essential gear includes ankle supports, knee pads, hiking boots, trekking poles, 2 liters of water, snacks, and a windbreaker. There are no restrooms along the Gongnyongneungseon section itself, so hikers should use facilities before Biseondae or at Huiungak Shelter.
Hikers who have completed the trail recommend starting early in the morning after a hearty meal, and emphasize the importance of wearing protective gear for the numerous stone stairs and difficult sections. The Madeungnyeong and Gongnyongneungseon sections are particularly challenging, but the breathtaking views from major photo zones like Sinseondae are said to make all the effort worthwhile. Thorough preparation and careful management of physical stamina are crucial for a safe and enjoyable hike.
