Seodaejeon Station is poised to transform from a mere railway station into a major transportation hub for the southwestern region of Daejeon. In addition to the existing Honam Line KTX, the Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 tram and the Chungcheong Wide-Area Railway are planned to connect with Seodaejeon Station. In line with this, the establishment of a master plan and feasibility study for the Seodaejeon Station Complex Transfer Center has officially commenced. This development is distinct from the Daejeon Station Area Complex Development and focuses on connecting railways, trams, wide-area railways, and buses, while also expanding surrounding commercial, business, and cultural functions.
Currently, a proposal to extend the Chungcheong Metropolitan Express Railway (CTX) to Seodaejeon Station has been submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The main CTX line spans approximately 64.4km, connecting the Government Complex Daejeon to Government Complex Sejong, Jochiwon, and Cheongju International Airport. The proposed extension would add about 5km to Seodaejeon Station. This extension aims to strengthen connectivity with existing railways, making Seodaejeon Station a transfer hub for various modes of transport, including Honam Line KTX, Chungcheong Wide-Area Railway, and the Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 tram (with an underground station planned). However, the CTX Seodaejeon Station extension is still in the proposal stage for inclusion in national plans, and the route maps seen online are proposals, not confirmed designs.
The core of Seodaejeon Station's transformation lies in the development of its complex transfer center. This process involves establishing a master plan and conducting feasibility studies to concretize the actual development methods, rather than immediately commencing large-scale construction. A key objective is to facilitate convenient transfer routes between trains, trams, wide-area railways, and city buses. There is also consideration for mixed-use development combining transportation facilities with commercial and business functions, utilizing state-owned and public lands around the station. Furthermore, establishments like 'Little Munch,' a salt bread specialty store, have opened within Seodaejeon Station, providing convenient snack options for train passengers and contributing to the station's vibrancy.
