The Incheon-originating KTX direct connection project has entered comprehensive test operations, with an aim to open in December 2026. Previously, Incheon residents faced the inconvenience of traveling to Seoul Station or Gwangmyeong Station to use the KTX, but soon they will be able to board the KTX directly from Songdo Station. The Incheon Metropolitan City announced that comprehensive test operations commenced on September 17.
The Incheon KTX project does not involve building a new high-speed rail line but rather connects the existing Suin-Bundang Line with the Gyeongbu High-Speed Line, enabling KTX services to Incheon. Existing stations such as Songdo, Choji, and Eocheon are being upgraded to accommodate KTX operations, and a new 3.19km section connecting the Suin Line and Gyeongbu High-Speed Line is being constructed. As of September 16, the overall progress rate is approximately 86%, with a total project cost of about 576.2 billion KRW.
Upon opening, travel from Songdo Station to Busan is expected to take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, and to Mokpo about 2 hours 10 minutes. However, the Korea National Railway has stated that the opening date may be adjusted by 1 to 2 months if any issues arise during test operations and safety inspections. Given past delays in the project's opening schedule, the December 2026 target remains subject to the outcomes of these tests.
