Aquaplanet 63, the aquarium located in the 63 Building, ceased operations on June 30, 2024. Its former location is now home to Pompidou Centre Hanwha, the Korean branch of France's Pompidou Centre. Opened in 1985, it was the first public aquarium in Korea and a popular indoor destination in Seoul, attracting approximately 1 million visitors annually before closing after 39 years.
Hanwha Group undertook a complete renovation of the 63 Building annex, which previously housed the aquarium and aging food and beverage outlets, from October 2024 to February 2026. Pompidou Centre Hanwha opened following an agreement between Hanwha Group and the Pompidou Centre in March 2023 for the establishment of a Korean branch. It surpassed 300,000 visitors within 100 days of opening, featuring a layout designed to encourage dining and shopping after exhibitions, and includes 25 retail stores, some of which are the first of their kind in Korea, such as Pierre Hermé Paris.
Many visitors express nostalgia and regret over the closure of the 63 Building Aquarium, often recalling memories of visits with children and the mermaid performances. While the aquarium is gone, the 63 Building Observatory continues to host media art exhibitions, suggesting it remains a worthwhile destination. For those looking for aquariums in Seoul, Coex Aquarium and Lotte World Aquarium are recommended alternatives.
