Culture Day (문화가 있는 날) in Korea has seen an expansion of its general scope, now applying every Wednesday. This broader initiative, however, has led to a need for clarity regarding specific benefits, particularly for movie theater discounts, which are a popular aspect of the program. This creates a buzz among moviegoers looking to maximize their savings.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism expanded Culture Day to every Wednesday starting April 2026. Despite this, major cinema chains such as CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox apply special movie discounts only on the second and last Wednesday of each month, a policy confirmed since May 2026. For September 2026, the designated cinema discount days are the 9th and 30th. CGV offers general 2D film tickets for 10,000 KRW for adults and 8,000 KRW for youth, specifically for screenings between 5 PM and 9 PM. For 4DX and SCREENX formats, CGV's special "Day" pricing is 13,000 KRW for adults and 11,000 KRW for youth, applicable for all showtimes on these Wednesdays, with ULTRA 4DX being an exception. The previous 7,000 KRW adult ticket price for 2D films is no longer valid; the current discounted adult price is 10,000 KRW.
Bloggers emphasize the importance of checking specific screening times for 2D films and verifying the final price on the booking screen, as not all showtimes or special content are eligible. It is crucial to confirm the chosen date is indeed one of the designated discount Wednesdays before making a reservation. One blogger noted that a direct check for Lotte Cinema on September 30th showed a 13,000 KRW price, not the 10,000 KRW discount, indicating potential variations across cinema chains or specific dates. While general discount stacking is usually not permitted, credit card billing discounts and consumer coupons may be exceptions.
